Polymer Image Guides

Asahi Kasei E-Materials is the world leader in manufacture of polymer image guides. Its image guides are manufactured from polymethyl methacrylate (pmma) as the optical core material. This substance is commonly known as acrylic, and it is the preferred material for low-cost high-quality polymer optics.

An image guide is a bundle of optical fibers that transfers optical spatial properties from one end of the bundle to the other. These bundles typically consist of thousands of individual optical fibers. Image guides are also called coherent image guides.

Image guides have historically been made from glass or silica material, but polymer versions are available as well. Glass materials offer superior optical transmission and a wide range of operating temperatures. Polymer solutions are attractive because they can be manufactured in a single process, and thus less expensive.
